Where to stay in Krakow: best neighborhoods and accommodations

You're planning a trip to Krakow and wondering where to stay, which neighborhood to choose, and what type of accommodation to book depending on your budget? Krakow is a fairly compact city with excellent public transportation, so you can choose between several neighborhoods without making your trip more complicated. Between the Old Town (Stare Miasto), the Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, the area around the train station, or slightly more residential districts, each area has its own vibe and practical advantages.

In this article, I'll help you choose the best neighborhood to stay in Krakow, then share a selection of accommodations I've tried myself or that come highly recommended, from budget finds to exceptional hotels. The idea is for you to be able to book a well-located place to stay, suited to your travel style, while taking advantage of Krakow's excellent value for money.

  • For a first trip to Krakow, staying in the Old Town (Stare Miasto) or in Kazimierz is the most convenient option if you want to do everything on foot.
  • The tram and bus network is excellent: even if you stay a bit farther out, you'll reach the main sights easily.
  • The cost of living is still lower than in France or Belgium: for the same level of comfort, hotel rates are often more affordable.
  • For a tight budget, look for apartments (Booking, Airbnb) around the Old Town or near the train station.
  • For a special stay, the 4- and 5-star hotels in Stare Miasto offer a level of luxury that's often more accessible than in Western Europe.

Which neighborhood should you stay in when visiting Krakow?

For a sightseeing trip, the two best neighborhoods to stay in Krakow are the Old Town (Stare Miasto) and the Jewish district of Kazimierz, with the immediate area around the train station as another practical and budget-friendly option.

Krakow is a city that's very well served by public transportation, with a dense network of trams and buses. The Jakdojade app is still the go-to choice: it pinpoints your location in a few seconds, shows you the nearest stops, (almost) real-time schedules, and plans your route in English. Even if you don't speak a word of Polish, it's easy to get from one neighborhood to another, including in the evening.

In practical terms, this means that if you choose to stay in the historic center, you can very easily reach other tourist areas such as Kazimierz (Jewish quarter), Podgórze (Oskar Schindler's factory, former ghetto), or even Nowa Huta to discover socialist architecture. Conversely, if you stay in Kazimierz or near the train station, you'll be about a fifteen-minute walk from Krakow's medieval heart.

Here is a small map to help you visualize the city before your visit:

Keep one more thing in mind: the cost of living is generally lower in Poland than in France or Belgium, even though prices have clearly gone up since the Covid period. You can still find good-quality accommodations at lower rates than in other major European cities for a similar level of comfort. This is especially true outside peak season (July–August, Christmas markets, long weekends).

So I recommend first and foremost that you look for accommodation in Stare Miasto, the Old Town. It's the most charming part of Krakow, centered around the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), the main square (Rynek Główny) and St. Mary's Basilica. From there, you can reach the main points of interest on foot or by tram: Wawel Castle, the Jewish quarter and Oskar Schindler's factory, as well as the train and bus stations. These are very convenient if you want to visit the Auschwitz concentration camp or spend a day in the mountains in Zakopane.

The natural alternative is to stay directly in the Jewish quarter, Kazimierz, which has a lot of charm, a real neighborhood feel, and a high concentration of cafés and restaurants. It's a very good option if you enjoy going out in the evening and soaking up a more bohemian atmosphere, while still being within walking distance of the Old Town.

Key points to remember about neighborhoods to stay in Krakow

Here is a summary table to help you quickly choose the neighborhood best suited to your stay in Krakow.

When should you choose this area? Neighborhood Main advantages Limitations to be aware of Ideal traveler profile
If you want to do everything on foot and are discovering Krakow for the first time. Stare Miasto (Old Town) Very central location, major monuments, a huge number of restaurants and cafés, lively atmosphere, easy access to trams and the train station. Lively, even noisy atmosphere near the main square, slightly higher prices, crowds in high season and on weekends. First visit, short stays, couples, car-free city trips.
If you like characterful neighborhoods with a more bohemian vibe. Kazimierz (Jewish Quarter) Lots of small restaurants, bars and cafés, friendly atmosphere, Jewish heritage, street art, easy access to the center in 10–15 minutes on foot. Can be lively late at night near the busiest streets, a bit farther from the train station on foot. Food-loving travelers, moderate night owls, history and culture enthusiasts.
If you're looking for the best value for money and convenient access to trains and buses. Around the train station (Kleparz / east side of Stare Miasto) Often lower prices, direct access to the airport train and intercity buses, Old Town reachable on foot. More urban environment and less "picture postcard", some very busy thoroughfares. Small budgets, train travelers, stays with excursions (Auschwitz, Zakopane, Wieliczka).
If you already know Krakow and prefer a more residential environment. Podgórze, Debniki, other outlying districts Calmer atmosphere, proximity to the Vistula, access to certain sites (Schindler's Factory, ghetto), sometimes more spacious accommodations. Almost always requires taking a tram or bus to reach the historic center. Travelers returning to Krakow, families who prioritize peace and quiet.

Where to stay in Krakow on a small budget?

For a small budget in Krakow, the best option is often to rent a well-located apartment, in or near the Old Town or in Kazimierz, rather than staying farther from the center.

Apartments help cut food costs thanks to a kitchenette and give you more space, while still offering very competitive prices. You'll find many of them on major booking platforms like Booking.com or Airbnb, with options ranging from simple studios to comfortable one-bedroom apartments. During my research and my stays in Krakow, I've spotted several places that combine a good location, comfort and reasonable prices for 2026.

I've put together a selection of good addresses and, in addition, here is a useful link to find cheap accommodation in Krakow.

1. Uroczy (close to the station and the Old Town)

If you're looking for excellent value for money right next to the Old Town, the Uroczy apartment is an excellent option.

This apartment is located right next to Stare Miasto, very close to Krakow's main railway station. Because it lies just outside the Old Town walls, it's often more affordable than equivalent places within the walls, with entry-level prices that generally remain competitive for 2026.

You can easily walk to the main sights, while also having direct access to public transportation and trains to the airport or for day trips. The apartment is bright, with a fully equipped kitchenette, a bathroom with a shower, and a sofa bed, making it practical for a couple or a small group.

2. Kazimierz Secret (Kazimierz, Jewish Quarter)

To enjoy the atmosphere of Kazimierz while keeping services close to those of a hotel, Kazimierz Secret is a good option to consider.

Offering a blend of apartment-style independence and hotel-style services, Kazimierz Secret is available at a price that remains reasonable for this neighborhood. You rent a fully equipped apartment with a kitchenette, coffee maker, free Wi‑Fi, etc., while also benefiting from front desk staff who can give you information, as well as the option of having breakfast on site with a buffet.

The rooms are a bit dark and the decor is not the most modern in the city, but the location is ideal and the value for money is attractive.

As its name suggests, this property is located in the Jewish Quarter (34 Józefa Street), which is very pleasant if you're looking for where to stay in Krakow in a friendly setting, with many small restaurants and cafés just around the corner.

You can get more information and book here.

Each unit has a well-equipped kitchenette, air conditioning, and a private bathroom.

You'll be comfortable here, with the added bonus of free Wi‑Fi and the option to book an airport transfer for an additional fee. It's a good compromise between independence and a prime location. However, you should book in advance, as prices can climb at the last minute.

Additional ideas on Airbnb

Airbnb apartments are still a great option if you're looking for a more personal feel or slightly more unusual places to stay, while still being right in the heart of the city.

Let's start with an apartment on the top floor, just steps from St. Florian's Gate (the entrance to the Old Town). You can walk to the train station in about 5 minutes, and it's the same distance to Krakow's main square. The apartment is part of the Airbnb Plus selection, which means it has been inspected by the platform and its level of comfort has been approved. It offers a great balance between a central location and contemporary comfort, at an average price that remains attractive compared with other European capitals.

The hosts are "Superhosts" on Airbnb, a status that reflects excellent feedback from travelers and a professional approach to managing the accommodation. The wood decor creates a very pleasant atmosphere after a day of sightseeing.

Traveler's Memo for choosing where to stay in Krakow

Here are the answers to the most frequent questions about neighborhoods and accommodations in Krakow, to help you finalize your choice quickly.

For a first visit, the simplest option is to stay in the Old Town (Stare Miasto) or just next to it. You'll be within walking distance of the main landmarks, the train station, and many restaurants, which makes the trip very smooth, especially if you're only staying 2 or 3 days.

Yes, Kazimierz is an excellent choice, especially if you like lively neighborhoods with lots of cafés and restaurants. Allow about 10 to 15 minutes on foot to reach the main square, and you'll be very close to Schindler's Factory and the banks of the Vistula.

Prices vary depending on the season, but you can often find good 3–4-star options at rates lower than in Paris or Brussels. By booking a bit in advance outside of the very high season, you can aim for a well-located hotel with a budget that remains reasonable given the services offered.

It's better to book early if you're going for a long weekend, in summer, or during the Christmas markets. During these times, the best value-for-money options get snapped up quickly, especially in the Old Town and Kazimierz.

Staying near the station is a good option if you're on a tight budget or planning several excursions by train or bus. You'll still be just a few minutes' walk from the Old Town, while benefiting from often more attractive prices and direct access to the airport.

To make the most of your budget, or if you're staying several nights, an apartment is often a better deal, especially with a kitchenette. If you prioritize simplicity and services (front desk, cleaning, breakfast), a well-located hotel will be more comfortable.

Yes, if you stay in the Old Town, in Kazimierz or near the train station, you'll be able to visit most places on foot. For sights that are a bit farther away, the trams are a great complement to walking and are easy to use with the Jakdojade app.
